Last month’s Phone-A-Thon – and you! – raised $90,000 … here’s more:

Dear Community Members,

The San Juan Public Schools Foundation acknowledges with gratitude the outpouring of support from local individuals and businesses during our annual Phone-A-Thon in October. Pledges from individuals and businesses through our Business Partnership program totaled over $90,000 for the 2015-2016 school year.

All money earned goes directly to our public schools to purchase items that state funds do not cover, including art and music supplies, items for STEM courses, and other educational materials for children in all grades K-12. In an era of reduced state funding, community support is critical to the ability of our public schools to sustain their pursuit of excellence. Once again, our community has risen to the occasion, and our children thank you for your support.

Most sincerely,

Your San Juan Public Schools Foundation

Graphing Calculators

A “Thank You” follows from Beth Spaulding at Friday Harbor High School:

The set of ten graphing calculators you purchased for the students in my classes are used on a daily basis.

I have included two pictures of students using the calculators in Algebra 2. Thank you very much for providing this technology for the students. Your generous support of the students has now provided access to a calculator when needed and required by current math standards.

Again – Thank You!

BuzzMath provides Students with new ways of approaching Math

Debbie Taylor, 6th Grade Math at FHES, compiled a number of Thank-You letters from her students for the Foundation’s support of a new subscription to BuzzMath for the 2015-16 academic year. BuzzMath is an online educational site teaching middle school Common Core mathematical skills through an engaging and rigorous platform, involving interactive applications with immediate feedback to the students, and also allowing the teachers to follow student progress through detailed reports informing differentiated instruction for all levels. We just got this note from the elementary school, and a cool video to go with it – check it out!

I wanted to provide your dedicated team an opportunity to see all of the appreciation video created by the FHES students and staff; not because of the creation, but because of what SJPSF has created with your generous support.

Our students are so fortunate to be recipients of your generosity…thank you.

This is a link to the video. You will need to be logged in to a google drive account to access it.

San Juan Island Pilot’s Association donates $500.00 for public school Museum of flight field trip

The San Juan Pilots Association was pleased to donate $500 to the San Juan Public Schools Foundation to help fund the 7th grade field trip to the Museum of Flight. This donation provided assistance with transportation to the museum, located just south of Seattle. The Museum of Flight web site is http://www.museumofflight.org/about

The Museum of Flight exists to acquire, preserve, and exhibit historically significant air and space artifacts, which provide a foundation for scholarly research, and lifelong learning programs that inspire an interest in and understanding of science, technology, and the humanities.

The central focus of the Museum’s educational programs is to broaden science literacy within an historical context, relating the evolution of technology to the human needs that drive it, and the resulting changes that technology brings to humanity.

As a resource to the public schools, youth programs are designed to complement established schoolroom curricula, presenting factual, yet exciting, interactive examples of the benefits of a science and math education.

“The 7th grade goes to the Museum of Flight every year, and with budget cuts again facing the school district, we at the middle school are especially grateful for funding from such groups as the Pilot’s Associate and the San Juan Public School Foundation.” said teacher John McMain. “The students gain so much from field trips like this one.”

Friday Harbor High School – Thanks for the Special Education Math Book and Online Job TIPS!

Here are two Thank You notes from the Friday Harbor Special Education Team:

Dear San Juan Public Schools Foundation:

Thank you for granting our request to purchase the Banking Math for Today’s World book. The students in the High School Special Education Program are already benefiting from working on math assignments from this book. We are currently having Apps installed on the three iPads thanks to your generosity for providing our program with these iPads and an iTunes account. These varied Apps will provide our students with additional practice with enunciation, articulation, counting money and skills to use in social situations. We are thankful for the existence and generosity of your foundation. We are very happy for students to be able to experience education delivered in a variety of ways and have access to these new and valuable resources.

Sincerely,
Becky Shanks, Simona Burla, Jen DeShon & Carold Ford

Dear San Juan Public Schools Foundation:

Thank you for accepting our grant request which made it possible to purchase a one year subscription to the Job TIPS Toolbox Pro. We were excited to receive this online program which we use daily to assist our students in the Transition Program portion of the High School Special Education Department. Our students find it to be an interesting program which gives them insight into what type of work environment best suits them. For students currently involved in internships in the community, we are using Job Tips Toolbox Pro to further boost their practice and experience in the workforce. For other students we are using this resource to help them determine their career interests. We are also using templates and samples from the program to support students in building resumes, cover letters and learning about the varied steps necessary to find, apply, obtain and keep a job. We are very glad to be able to provide these resources to our students and are truly grateful for your support for making it possible.

Sincerely,
Becky Shanks, Simona Burla, Jen DeShon & Carold Ford
